Proair serves Whittier, about 10.9 miles from our Paramount Boulevard shop, roughly 18 minutes without traffic. What makes it different for HVAC is layering. The city incorporated in 1898, grew through 1920s and 1930s tracts such as College Hills, then filled in after World War II. The 1987 earthquake then damaged many Uptown buildings, so expect altered layouts behind the walls.

Uptown Whittier after the 1987 earthquake

The Whittier Narrows earthquake hit at 7:42 a.m. on October 1, 1987, at magnitude 5.9. It killed eight people and damaged many of Uptown’s historic buildings, and a 5.2 aftershock followed on October 4. The Whittier Conservancy formed that year to stop demolition of historic buildings.

Older homes often hide decades of duct changes around the equipment.

For HVAC work, that history matters. A building that has been repaired and altered may have ducts, gas lines and equipment in places no drawing shows. We trace what is there before recommending changes.

Ask the city whether any historic status affects where a condenser or duct run can go. For older homes without room for ducts, a ductless system can add cooling with little disturbance to original walls.

That question has teeth here. Whittier has four historic districts: Hadley-Greenleaf, Central Park, College Hills and Earlham. The city says no permit is issued for work on a historic resource or a vintage building, one built before 1941, until a Certificate of Appropriateness is approved. Interior work that changes nothing outside is exempt. So a furnace swap in a closet and a new condenser on a street-facing wall can follow very different paths.

Census survey figures for 2020 to 2024 put the median Whittier unit at 1956, with 14% built before 1940 and another 53% in the 1940s and 1950s. About 64% are detached houses, 42% of households rent and 71% of occupied homes heat with utility gas.

What does hillside heat exposure do above Uptown?

Slopes change the sun. A home on the higher streets may have no neighbor shading its roof or west windows, and that glass can overload a system late in the day. The published record high here is 113°F, so a marginal system will show it. Whittier sits about 15 miles inland, with typical summer highs of 84 to 97°F and winter lows of 41 to 50°F.

Unshaded west glass on a slope can drive a late-day cooling load.

Fixes start with measurement. A Manual J, the heat-load math for one specific house, counts glass, orientation and insulation. Shades, attic insulation and sealed ducts often help more than a bigger unit, which can bring short cycling, the rapid on-off running that wears parts.

Heating and cooling in Whittier’s College Hills and postwar grove homes

  • Ductless mini splits

Cooling for 1920s and 1930s homes where ducts would mean cutting original plaster. In College Hills or Hadley-Greenleaf, settle the outdoor unit’s spot with the city before you sign anything.

  • AC repair

Capacitors, contactors, leaks and iced coils. The 113°F record high finds the weak part. About 42% of Whittier households rent, so tenants should pass the diagnosis to the owner before work starts.

  • Open furnace cabinet in a hallway closet of an older Whittier home
    Furnace repair

Older gas equipment in tight closets, checked with care for venting and burners. About 71% of occupied Whittier homes use utility gas, and winter lows reach the 40s, so test it in fall.

  • Central air addition

Postwar houses on former grove lots may have the attic room for new duct runs. About 53% of Whittier units date from the 1940s and 1950s, so check the electrical panel early.

  • AC replacement

Size it for the actual sun exposure on your slope. Typical Whittier summer highs reach 97°F, so ask for a Manual J load calculation in place of a match to the old unit.

  • Duct repair

Sealing decades of patched joints in altered homes and buildings. After the 1987 earthquake, some Whittier ducts may run where no drawing shows, so have them traced and tested.

  • Commercial HVAC repair

Older Uptown buildings on Philadelphia Street and Greenleaf Avenue may carry equipment added long after construction. Tell us who controls roof access, and ask the city before changing anything outside the building.

Penn Street permits and roads into Whittier

Find the City of Whittier Building & Safety Division at 13230 Penn Street, (562) 567-9320. It also runs an online portal for permits and inspections. Keep Public Works separate: that department handles its own permits at (562) 567-9500. Ask your contractor to confirm in writing which permit the job needs.

State Route 72 follows Whittier Boulevard, I-605 serves the city and Greenleaf Avenue runs through Uptown. Whittier College and Philadelphia Street are good reference points when you give directions. So are the John Greenleaf Whittier statue in Central Park, the Greenway Trail on the old Union Pacific line, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital and Whittwood Town Center.

Electric service is usually Edison and gas is usually SoCalGas, and the name on your bill settles it. Whittier also sits on the Clean Power Alliance board, so your statement may show that name for generation.

What should you expect when we come from Paramount Boulevard?

Whittier sits at the longer end of our drive, so a clear description saves time. Tell us the building’s age and what you have noticed. The technician tests the system, explains the fault in plain words, gives the price before starting and tests again after the work. Our 16 Google reviews do not say which cities customers live in, so we let the process speak here.

Whittier questions

Can I add AC to a historic Uptown Whittier building without major changes?

Often yes, with a ductless system. Small line sets replace the large ducts that would otherwise need new chases. Check with Building & Safety at (562) 567-9320 about any historic status before fixing the outdoor unit’s location. Our mini split guide compares ductless systems and central air for older homes.

Why is one floor of my Whittier hillside home hotter than the other?

Heat rises, and the upper floor takes the most roof and window gain, especially facing west on a slope. Ducts may also favor the lower floor. Check that registers are open and the return is clear, then ask for a load check and airflow readings. Zoning or a small ductless unit upstairs can even things out.

Should I worry about my furnace in Whittier after an earthquake?

Yes, check it after any strong shaking. Look at the vent pipe and the gas connection for movement, and listen for odd burner noise. If you smell gas, get everyone out, leave switches alone and call 911 or SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 once you are clear of the building. Do not restart gas equipment that looks shifted until a professional has inspected it.
