Furnace Replacement in South Gate, CA
Replace a furnace when the heat exchanger has failed, the repairs keep stacking up or the parts are gone. Age alone is a weak reason, because our light winters leave a furnace with a fraction of the run time it would see in a cold state. Furnace replacement in South Gate also brings duct testing and low-NOx rules.

Time to replace your furnace, or fix it once more?
Three signs settle it quickly. Anything else is a numbers question.
- The heat exchanger is cracked or rusted through. That is a carbon monoxide risk and the furnace stays off.
- A safety shutoff has been applied. If a technician or the utility shuts off a gas appliance as unsafe, get the reason and fix or replace it before running it again.
- Parts are no longer made. Older boards, motors and gas valves can become impossible to source.
| Situation | Leaning | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Igniter, sensor or capacitor failure | Repair | Small cost, furnace has more seasons left |
| Blower motor on a sound furnace | Repair, after comparing prices | Larger bill, yet the heat exchanger still matters more |
| Second big repair in two seasons | Lean toward replacing | Money is going into a unit that keeps failing |
| Heat exchanger failure on an older unit | Replace | Parts and labor rarely make sense |
| AC also failing | Replace together | Shared cabinet, coil and duct work on one job |
Run the repair checks first if nobody has diagnosed the failure. A furnace condemned on a guess is an expensive mistake.
What a furnace replacement covers
A replacement takes out the old unit and leaves a working, documented heating system behind. That means more than a new cabinet in the same spot. The gas connection gets leak-checked, the vent has to suit the new model, and the sheet metal is rebuilt to fit. A closet unit may also need its return rebuilt.
Read each proposal against this list. A quote that names a furnace and stops there has left the hard part unpriced.
- A repair-or-replace finding on the old furnace
- A load check, so the new model is not oversized
- Old furnace out, with gas and power shut off first
- New cabinet, vent, gas connection and sheet metal transitions
- Duct sealing, plus the permit and rater visit
- A full heat cycle test and records for your files

What replaces a gravity furnace or 1950s closet unit?
Almost half of South Gate’s housing went up between 1940 and 1959, so some homes still run original layouts. A gravity furnace has no blower: warm air rises through big ducts on its own. A modern fan-driven furnace cannot simply bolt on to that system, because the ducts and returns were built for slow air.
Old duct wrap and furnace insulation can contain asbestos. Do not disturb it. Have it identified before demolition, because that decision changes the scope, the schedule and even the duct test rules.
Homes heated by wall or floor units have other routes, covered on our wall heater repair and replacement page. Closet furnaces from the same era are usually a direct change-out, meaning new equipment in the old spot.
What Rule 1111 means for your new furnace
You can still buy a gas furnace. South Coast AQMD’s board voted 7 to 5 on June 6, 2025 against the zero-emission amendments, so the phase-out many people read about did not happen. Rule 1111 remains in effect, and amendment work has continued since, so check its current status.
That rule holds new fan-type central furnaces to a 14 ng/J NOx limit, which is why you will see the term low-NOx on quotes. Ask the contractor to name a compliant model. A 2026 CEQA notice exists for a further amendment, so check current status on the South Coast AQMD site before you sign.

How a furnace change-out day runs
Compare and size
Review the failure, then check the load with a Manual J calculation so an oversized unit is not simply repeated.
Protect and shut down
Floors get covered, then the gas and power are shut off at the furnace.
Remove the old furnace
Flue, gas, wiring and duct connections come apart, and the old cabinet leaves through the hallway or attic hatch.
Fit the new one
A new unit rarely matches the old footprint, so the sheet metal transitions get rebuilt and sealed.
Test it
A full heat cycle confirms gas pressure, temperature rise, draft and safety shutoffs.
Close it out
City inspection and any ECC-Rater visit finish the job. Keep those records.
What does furnace replacement in South Gate cost?
HVAC Project Cost’s 2026 figures put a full HVAC replacement in California at $6,500 to $16,000. That is a published range for full systems, not a Proair quote, and a furnace-only job can sit well apart from it. Use it as a sanity check on a bundled furnace and AC proposal.
- Efficiency: a condensing furnace needs a drain and plastic vent on top of its higher price.
- Access: attic hatches and narrow closets add labor.
- Ducts: sealing to pass the leakage test is often the wild card.
- Age of the house: old gas lines, flues or asbestos can each add a line item.
SoCalGas offers a 2026 Home Energy Efficiency Rebate with furnace amounts by efficiency, subject to funding and a December 31, 2026 postmark deadline, so check current availability. The federal 25C tax credit ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. See the cost breakdown for South Gate for more detail.
Duct testing after the change-out
Plan for it, because a gas furnace counts as an air handler under the 2025 Energy Code. Permit applications filed on or after January 1, 2026 fall under that code. Connected ducts must be sealed by the installer and verified by an ECC-Rater (formerly called a HERS rater), an independent tester.
A pass means total leakage at or under 10%, or leakage to outside at or under 7%. If neither works in an older duct system, every accessible leak gets sealed and the rater confirms it by eye and with a smoke test. Ducts in a garage have a 6% limit. Duct repair may be part of the job, and this guide to California energy rules explains the wider picture.
The permit sits with South Gate Building and Safety, since the city says mechanical improvements need one. Find the office at 8650 California Avenue, (323) 563-9549, with counter hours Monday to Thursday, 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM. City Hall closes Fridays, so ask who applies and when.

Why Proair for furnace replacement
Our Paramount Boulevard shop keeps us close to South Gate’s older streets. Furnace installation comes up in our Google reviews, and the listing stood at 4.8 stars and 16 reviews on October 30, 2026. You hear what failed and what a replacement costs before you decide.
Put Pro Air Air Conditioning Service Inc into the state lookup and CSLB C-20 License #776028 should come back. We diagnose the old furnace first, because a replacement should follow a proven failure. Then you get the price, and once the new unit is in we run it through a full heat test. Monday to Saturday, 9 to 5, is when the shop answers.

“Furnace installation was smooth and efficient. The pros are that my new furnace is working like a charm, and my home is warmer. The con was the initial installation cost, but the benefits are evident.”
“The furnace not blowing heat during the winter was a major inconvenience, but after calling for service, the technician found and replaced the faulty blower motor, restoring comfort to my home.”

Before you sign any proposal, verify a C-20 license with the CSLB, and ask for the model number, AFUE, Rule 1111 compliance, permit responsibility, rater testing and warranty terms in writing. We also replace furnaces in Bell, Compton and Maywood.

Furnace Replacement questions
How long should a furnace last in South Gate before replacement?
There is no fixed number here. Short winters mean light use, so a well-kept South Gate furnace can outlast the rule-of-thumb ages quoted for cold regions. Condition matters more: the heat exchanger, the blower and parts supply. Attic units can age faster than closet units because of summer heat, so inspect them closely.
Must my ducts be tested if I only replace the furnace?
Usually yes. A gas furnace counts as an air handler, and replacing an air handler triggers sealing and rater verification of connected ducts. The published exceptions include ducts already certified by a rater, systems under 40 feet of duct and ducts containing asbestos. Confirm which case fits your house with the rater and the city.
Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?
Often yes, if both are old. They share a cabinet space, a coil and the ducts, so one job avoids paying for labor and testing twice. If the AC is fairly new and matched, a furnace-only change-out can make sense. Ask for prices both ways, along with the coil compatibility of the new furnace.
Can I switch from a gas furnace to an electric wall heater?
Generally no. The California Energy Commission’s 2025 manual gives this exact case and says the new system is limited to natural gas, propane or the existing fuel type, with a heat pump as the electric option. A ducted or ductless heat pump is the route if you want to leave gas behind.
Does furnace replacement need a rebate application before the work starts?
Read the program form before you commit, because rules vary. SoCalGas lists its 2026 furnace rebates on its Home Energy Efficiency Rebate application, with a December 31, 2026 postmark deadline and funding limits. Check current availability and eligibility directly with SoCalGas, and keep the invoice showing the model number and efficiency.
Will a new furnace fit in my old hallway closet in South Gate?
Usually, though sheet metal changes are normal. New cabinets differ in width and height, and the return setup may need rebuilding. If an old platform carried return air and gets altered, the Energy Code calls for a real duct. Measure the door and the closet before picking a model, especially in tight 1950s hallways.
