Heating and Cooling in Pomona, CA
Pomona runs far hotter than the coast, so heating and cooling in Pomona is mostly a question of whether your AC can hold up through August. Average daily highs reach about 90°F in July and 92°F in August, and those are averages, not peaks.

Pomona is also the longest drive on this site: about 30.7 miles from our Paramount Boulevard shop, roughly 40 minutes without traffic. We would rather say so plainly. Please call to confirm scheduling for your address before planning around us.
August in the Pomona Valley: why do systems fail inland?
A condenser sheds heat into outdoor air, so the hotter the air, the harder it works. At 92°F as a daily average high, the AC here runs longer than one in South Gate, and it does so for more weeks. Weak capacitors, dirty coils and low charge all show up first in this kind of heat.
NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Fairplex station count about 17 days of 90°F or hotter in July, 19 in August and 15 in September. June and October add about 12 more, and that long run is what wears a compressor down.

Older homes make it harder. Five-year Census figures through 2023 show 24.5% of housing from the 1950s and 17.1% from before 1950, and the Lincoln Park and Edison historic districts are on the National Register. Many of those houses got central air long after they were built, in attics never meant for ducts.
About 6.3% of occupied units report no heating fuel and 4% of housing is mobile homes, so some residents rely on partial setups. Attic ducts at summer temperatures lose cooling before it reaches the rooms.
Phillips Ranch, the city’s newest neighborhood, grew quickly from the 1980s, and 2024 Census estimates place about 14% of units in that decade. Those houses are past 35 now, so ask how old the ducts are before you price new equipment.

Heating and cooling in Pomona: services worth booking early
- AC maintenance
Book a tune-up before June. Valley heat punishes dirty coils and weak capacitors, and NOAA normals at Fairplex show about 7 days of 90°F or hotter that month alone.
- AC replacement
If the system cannot hold temperature in August, ask for a load calculation and a side-by-side price. A 92°F average high at Fairplex leaves less margin for a wrong size.
- Duct repair
Sealing attic runs in pre-1960 homes returns cooling that hot attics steal. About 17.1% of Pomona housing predates 1950, so many ducts were added to attics never planned for them.
- Wall heater repair
Older gas units in pre-war Pomona houses need venting and burner checks. December lows average about 41.5°F at Fairplex, so book that check before the first cold snap.
- Furnace repair
About 69.1% of occupied Pomona units heat with utility gas, per 2024 Census estimates, and SoCalGas supplies it. January lows near 43°F at Fairplex make ignition worth testing in the fall.
- Heat pump installation
About 20% of occupied units here heat with electricity, per 2024 estimates. A heat pump has to carry 90°F months and 40°F nights at Fairplex, so ask for sizing on both loads.
Garey Avenue permits and Edison accounts
Permits run through City of Pomona Building and Safety, City Hall, 505 South Garey Avenue, 909-620-2371. The city lists walk-in hours Monday to Thursday, 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, and it closes Fridays. Accounts here sit with Southern California Edison for electricity and SoCalGas for gas.
The city’s forms page carries a Mechanical Permit form and a “Do I Need a Permit” guide. Inspections run Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and a request filed after 4:00 PM lands two business days out.
If your bill names Pomona Choice Energy, that is the city’s own power program, created in 2020. Edison still delivers the electricity, meters it and sends one bill with both sets of charges.
Lincoln Park, Wilton Heights and Hacienda Park: before a unit moves

The city lists five historic districts, and Lincoln Park, Wilton Heights and Hacienda Park are its residential ones. Exterior work there generally needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, and the design guidelines decide whether it counts as minor or major. We found no published rule that names condensers, so ask Planning at (909) 620-2191 before a new unit goes in view of the street.
Around Fairplex, Cal Poly Pomona and the Phillips Mansion
I-10, the 57, the 60 and the 71 all meet around Pomona, which sets the drive from us. Fairplex, the Los Angeles County Fair site, and Cal Poly Pomona are the big landmarks. The city was incorporated in 1888 and counted 151,713 residents in 2020.
Cal Poly sits southwest of the 10 and 57 junction on the old W.K. Kellogg ranch, and Western University of Health Sciences lies south of the 10 off Towne Avenue. Renters hold about 47.9% of occupied units, so near either campus a landlord usually signs off on the work. Ganesha Park, the Phillips Mansion and the Pomona-North Metrolink station make good reference points.
If we can reach you, how does the visit go?
We load the truck in South Gate, arrive equipped, and start by diagnosing the fault. Then you hear what is wrong and what the fix costs before we begin. A test run closes out the visit.

Pomona questions
How can I tell if my Pomona AC is keeping up in August?
Compare the air going in and coming out. A healthy system usually cools air about 15 to 20 degrees across the coil, so hold a thermometer at a return and a nearby register. With Pomona averaging a 92°F high in August, a house may still drift warmer by late afternoon. If the gap is small, change the filter, then call for a test.
Does Pomona have a local permit office for HVAC work?
Yes, City of Pomona Building and Safety at City Hall on South Garey Avenue. Phone 909-620-2371 to check requirements. The office closes on Fridays, so plan around Monday to Thursday. In the Lincoln Park or Edison historic districts, ask what exterior review applies before you place any outdoor unit.
