Heating and Cooling in Pasadena, CA
Heating and cooling in Pasadena has to respect the house. About 29.4% of the city’s housing predates 1940, and in a Craftsman with original trim, a ductless system or careful attic work often beats cutting new chases through old walls.

The average July high is about 89°F. Pasadena Water and Power replaces Edison. The city sits about 18.9 miles from our Paramount Boulevard shop, roughly 30 minutes without traffic, so call to confirm scheduling for your address.
Bungalow Heaven and Craftsman trim: where does the equipment go?
Bungalow Heaven holds about 800 small Craftsman homes built from 1900 to 1930, and it became a landmark district in 1989. These houses were built for shade and cross-breezes, not ducts. Attics are often low, walls hold old plaster and every new chase shows in the woodwork.

A ductless mini split answers most of that. Refrigerant lines need only a small hole, and each head cools its own room. Lines can run to the back of the house and stay low on the wall.
Not every Pasadena home is a bungalow. Census estimates for 2019 to 2023 show 26.5% of units in buildings of 20 or more apartments, so central plants and rooftop units matter here as much as bungalows do.
Bungalow Heaven is one of many protected areas: a 2023 city survey document counts 28 Landmark Districts covering over 3,500 properties. Summer also peaks late. NOAA normals put the August high at 91.3°F, the hottest spells usually land in mid to late September, and the all-time record of 115°F came in that month.
Fire is the other local risk. The Eaton Fire destroyed parts of Pasadena in January 2025, and the State Fire Marshal’s 2025 table lists 4,152 acres of the city as Very High hazard, up from 3,480 on the older map. Plan for smoke as well as heat near the foothills.
Landmark review and Pasadena Water and Power
Pasadena’s guidance says a mechanical upgrade is exempt from landmark review if it is not visible from the street. Exterior work you can see from the street needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit. So placement decides the paperwork, and the rear yard is usually the simple answer.

The permit office is the Pasadena Permit Center, 175 N. Garfield Ave., 1st Floor, (626) 744-4200. Pasadena Water and Power, a city-owned utility with over 65,000 electric customers, supplies your power, so Edison programs do not apply. Ask PWP directly about current rebates. Gas comes from SoCalGas.
Since June 22, 2026, the Permit Center opens Monday to Thursday and alternate Fridays, 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, so check its calendar before a Friday trip. Permit Center Online handles permit searches and inspection scheduling.
PWP lists $170 per ton on qualifying heat pumps and mini splits, which need 15.3 SEER2 and 7.8 HSPF2, the federal efficiency ratings. It says funds are limited, so call its rebate line at 626-744-7311 before you buy.
Give us a cross street off Colorado Boulevard, or tell us if you are near Old Pasadena, Bungalow Heaven or the Rose Bowl. Reviewers do not name their cities, so treat our 4.8 rating as a general figure.
Heating and cooling in Pasadena: which services suit older homes?
- Ductless mini splits
The usual answer for Bungalow Heaven houses where ducts would damage original finishes. PWP limits ductless rebates to three units every 10 years, so plan the rooms together and not one at a time.
- Central air addition
Possible in larger homes with attic room. A load calculation and duct route come before any price. In a landmark district, keep the outdoor unit out of street view or plan on city review.
- Floor and wall heater repair
Early Pasadena homes may still run on old gas floor or wall units. These need venting checks. About 67.1% of occupied homes here heat with gas, and December lows average near 45°F.
- Commercial HVAC repair
Small offices and shops along Colorado Boulevard depend on working rooftop units. Apartment owners do too: buildings of 20 or more units hold about 26.5% of Pasadena homes, so tell us who controls roof access.
- Heat pump installation
One system can replace an old furnace and AC where the panel and attic allow it. PWP’s rebate needs new equipment and an application within 180 days of purchase, so keep the paperwork together.
- AC maintenance
PWP lists a $30 central AC tune-up rebate, once a year per unit. The invoice should show refrigerant charge, airflow adjustment and coil cleaning, so read the rebate terms before you book a visit.
- Air purifiers
For a lingering Eaton Fire smell, Pasadena Public Health suggests portable air cleaners with both a HEPA and an activated carbon filter. Ask what your room size needs and what the unit removes.

Pasadena questions
Do I need approval to add AC to a home in a Pasadena landmark district?
Only if the equipment shows from the street, under the city’s published guidance. Mechanical work that stays out of street view is exempt from a Certificate of Appropriateness, though it still needs the usual mechanical permit. Confirm your address with the Permit Center at (626) 744-4200 before you pick a location for the outdoor unit.
Do Edison rebates work for a Pasadena Water and Power customer?
No, Edison programs follow Edison customers, and your electricity comes from city-owned Pasadena Water and Power. Check PWP’s current programs directly before you count on any incentive. SoCalGas rebates are a separate matter and depend on the equipment, the form and available funding, so read the terms first.
How do I clear Eaton Fire smoke from a Pasadena home’s HVAC system?
Start with the filter. Pasadena Public Health tells smoke-affected homes to use a MERV 11 or 12 filter, seal gaps around the holder and change it monthly until the smell goes. Have the airflow checked first, because a tighter filter can strain an older system. That guidance covers smoke damage only, so a fire-damaged structure needs clearance before anyone enters.
